Beware of data theft! Cybercriminals are asking for the IMEI of cell phones to impersonate it

Colombians who have a cell phone, regardless of its characteristics or brand, should be vigilant because they could be victims of cybercriminals seeking to impersonate them. The information was revealed on August 11 by the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC), which indicated that criminals are resorting to phishing, that is, deceiving people to obtain personal information.

The theft of information is being implemented through calls and text messages in which they claim, on behalf of the CRC, that users must register the data in links or respond to messages. Remember that this is false, so it is recommended to ignore these communications.

Taking into account that this information is serious, the CRC, in coordination with the Colombian Cyber Emergency Response Group (colCERT), is investigating the situation.

It was detailed that the links indicated in the messages are being verified to find out their origin and the domains have been reported to the communication service operators for their blocking. In the same way, the Commission is advancing the administrative actions for the recovery of the short codes from which the text messages come, under the causes defined in the regulation.

It is important to mention that the Attorney General's Office is already aware of this case. Taking this into account, the CRC invites citizens who have received these messages to send a screenshot, including the code from which it comes, to the email address atencioncliente@crcom.gov.co in order to track cybercriminals.

In the event that the aforementioned icon appears in red, it is because this information is already public, and in the event that the closed padlock appears in green, it is because this information is still private.

The National Police indicated that, in the event that you consult the Leaks Titan page and it indicates that all your data, or at least the vital ones, are exposed, you must report it immediately.
