Which technology certification should you choose in 2022? | The financial

Whether for updating or for professional reconversion, it is necessary to keep track of the trends in certification in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT) for this year 2022.

“The management of technology and its infrastructure requires constant training and updating. Systems and hardware evolve year after year and require the implementation of new applications or services that have not always been foreseen by the company”, recalled Paula Brenes, commercial vice-chancellor of Cenfotec University.

Global companies keep technological transformation on their priority agenda, which translates into demands for specialization and certification in a wide variety of areas, encompassing the platforms of the 4.0 revolution (cloud, automation, analytics and artificial intelligence) and especially computer security in view of the needs for continuity of services and the increase in cybercrime.

The certifications allow access to jobs in firms located inside and outside the national territory, international recognition, access to exclusive study and labor resources, access to executive management positions and salary improvements.

The main benefit is that they diversify the career, increasing employment opportunities or internal promotion, as they validate knowledge in a field or area and show that the person is reasonably up-to-date technically or professionally given the approval requirements. They are not proof of participation and attendance. "They allow you to stay competitive," stressed Brenes, from Cenfotec.

Alberto Escoto, global director of elev8 Education, said that the most relevant certifications for the market are varied, but that the most sought after by recruiters currently focus on Azure, AWS, CompTia Network, cybersecurity, Python, .NET and Scrum.

“Obtaining a certification further promotes a candidate's visibility during a hiring process,” Escoto said. “From the point of view of employers, having certified personnel promotes the maturity of the company in technologies and its ability to manage change in digital migrations. This is because certified specialists have the knowledge to guide and share information with other collaborators.”

According to the 2021 Information Technology Salary Report, compiled by specialist IT recruiting firm Robert Half, IT professionals with popular certifications can earn 5% to 10% more than their peers, either who are just starting out and building their resume or have been in the industry for 20 years.

Yenory Rojas Hernández, president of the College of Professionals in Informatics and Computing (CPIC), indicated that her entity maintains a strategy of updating professionals from both the public and private sectors through strategic allies through congresses, Webinars and free training . In addition, it has agreements with strategic allies that will provide certifications with discounts and special conditions.

It is enough to review the requirements for hiring different positions on LinkedIn to confirm that companies request certifications to guarantee that they will have specialists in the areas in which they wish to hire professionals or in which they require specific services or solutions.

Even when a company or institution hires a technology provider or from another field, among the requirements, it requires having certified specialists in certain areas.

The Deloitte study for the Chamber of Information and Communications (Camtic) shows that local firms will continue hiring personnel, while other indicators in the country indicate that the demand for technicians and professionals in technology is maintained.

Depends on...

The first thing to assess is your career path and the path you will follow: reskilling, which is upgrading and strengthening your current profession, or upskilling to reinvent yourself by switching from another profession to a technology career.

"Armed with new knowledge and tools, professionals can innovate in their work environment," said Alejandro Díaz, director of the Executive Education Program at Texas Tech University Costa Rica. “It can help improve process efficiency, automate tedious tasks, and uncover new business opportunities. This implies a growth in the level of complexity of his role, which should be recognized and rewarded”.

Also review the requirements that companies are asking for in their LinkedIn job postings to get an idea of similar positions to the ones you already have or aspire to whether you choose reskilling or upskilling. Also remember that one or two languages are essential.

Depending on the type of position you could also choose the certification. For example, internationally and among the most outstanding certifications, the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is recommended for positions related to computer security such as systems engineer, analyst, manager, auditor and consultant security architect, network architect and even IT manager or CIO (for its acronym in English).

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Certified Associate Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect, and Microsoft Azure certification validate skills to design and implement cloud initiatives using those platforms, and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification is recommended for security and control of information systems and IT especially for those who aspire to an IT manager role.

Depends on the experience you have, too. There are basic certifications and as new levels of knowledge and skills are acquired and certified, higher level or expert certifications can be chosen.

The Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification is an advanced exam for solution architects to demonstrate their expertise in designing cloud and hybrid solutions running on Microsoft Azure, including compute, network, storage, monitoring, and security.

Díaz recalled that in order to have a more complete preparation, which allows the development and growth of the professional, they must be combined with other professional and even technical skills: business communication, ethics and conflict management.
