Amazon has been working with a focus on the motor industry for some time. A couple of years ago they integrated Alexa into some BMW and Fiat models and, now, they want to go one step further: they intend to sneak into your car through Fire TV.

But what is Fire TV? Before discussing Amazon's plans, let's get up to speed. Fire TV is a streaming content device with which you can turn your television into a Smart TV: it connects to the television and to your home Wi-Fi network to give you access to different applications. So far, the company founded by Jeff Bezos has sold 150 million devices worldwide. A figure that they want to increase through the motor world.

This was announced at CES 2022: Amazon wants to integrate Fire TV into vehicle infotainment systems as Android Auto or Apple CarPlay have done. Its objective is to create synergies with each car brand to form part of their systems, adapting to the needs of the manufacturer and its customers.

How does Fire TV work?

The first requirement is that the car has an internet connection and an Amazon account that allows it to work. Once these conditions are fulfilled, you will be able to watch videos, play games, listen to music, obtain information or view previously downloaded content during a trip. The music, meanwhile, can be played via Bluetooth, headphones or on the vehicle's speakers. It is understood, of course, that the functionality is created for the co-pilot and the rest of the passengers.

In the United States, for example, it will be possible to access more than a million episodes of series and television, including Prime Video content. To improve the experience, it will be possible to download them so as not to depend on the connection of the phone or the Wi-Fi access point of the car itself.

Alexa's role

Alexa could not be missing in this equation. Amazon's virtual assistant will be integrated into Fire TV so that passengers can use voice control, thus facilitating the search for an application, a series or other content. However, it will also be possible to manage it from the car screen, where it will create shortcuts.

Cars with two screens in the back row will be able to view the content at the same time or individually. The driver or co-pilot will also be able to select the content or limit the viewing time on the rear screens.

Connect your home and your car

Amazon has explained that they are currently working to combine Fire TV activity at home with that of the car. Or what is the same: we can pause content on television and continue watching it in the vehicle. To this must be added the development of personalized profiles to recommend content and update the home screen based on the user's preferences.

Stellantis and BMW

At the end of 2021, Stellantis became the first manufacturer to integrate Fire TV into the infotainment system of some of its models. The first have been the Jepp Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer that, now, have given the baton to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Chrysler Pacifica. In 2022, this Amazon service will also be integrated into the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator.

On the other hand, BMW also presented its BMW Theater Screen with built-in Fire TV at CES 2022. It is a 31-inch panoramic screen that comes out from the roof and extends almost the entire width of the cabin to turn the rear seats into Kind of like a movie theater on wheels. Amazon provides the content through Fire TV so that passengers can enjoy a wide variety of content in 4K: movies, series, music, programs... that they can also download to watch while they are traveling.
