Get air was born at the end of 2020 as a show of affection and encouragement from Belén Lamas to her colleagues at the San Rafael Hospital in A Coruña and has become a solidarity initiative that seeks to help the Economic Kitchen and the Galician Federation of Diseases Rare and Chronic (Fegerec). The proposal has grown thanks to the disinterested support of numerous people and currently seeks to make visible those entities that have not stopped working even during the hardest months of the pandemic.

“It is something that I heard a lot from anesthetists, in the operating room it is always said in general anesthesia. And one day I thought: this is what we all need, to get air », explains Lamas, who decided to put the phrase on some cloth bags that he distributed to several of his colleagues. But not only that. This operating room supervisor wanted to give this initiative a solidarity perspective through a collaboration with the Economic Kitchen. «I decided to do a detail to my colleagues for the year we had had and because what was coming was not much better. I made more bags for acquaintances and relatives, to whom I told them that all the proceeds would go to the Economic Kitchen, ”explains the person in charge of Take a breath.

Growing Take Air

Lamas received many requests after posting his proposal in the hospital's information group. One of the shirts he made was received by Manuel Ferreiro, a doctor who worked on the front line from the Emergency Service of the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de A Coruña (CHUAC), while the health company created other units for those colleagues who had experienced tougher personal situations. «to give them encouragement with the phrase».

Get air continued to grow and after appearing in the press, the project became popular. The sale of T-shirts increased and their purchase became accessible to citizens who wanted to collaborate with the Economic Kitchen thanks to the help that various people gave to Lamas. «Xente de Barrio appeared, which was created during the pandemic. It was born from the recognition of the neighborhoods, from the applause of the toilets… I liked their philosophy and they offered to help me. 5,000 euros were raised for the Economic Kitchen", explains Lamas about the first part of an initiative that has conquered the people of A Coruña.

Exclusive designs by Yolanda Dorda

The artist Yolanda Dorda contacted the person in charge of the project during the summer of 2021. «She told me that she liked the idea and that she wanted to collaborate with the Economic Kitchen and with the project making some of her designs available or creating an exclusive one”, explains Lamas, who has always admired the painter's work.

Marisa, from Estudios Fiama, also wanted to do her bit and the three of them, together with a friend of Belén Lamas, began to plan the second campaign of the project. «We love Yolanda's women. We wanted a woman like that because she represents us, because she is a strong woman," explains the health worker.

Thus, the t-shirts of the current campaign have two different designs made exclusively by the artist for Coge aire: an expressive woman and a dog full of colour. «Alenta's shirt, the girl's, is liking all audiences, both men and women. Pipo, who is the dog, is also liking it a lot because it is fun, "says Lamas.

A solidarity project

Another key person in this second part of the project is Jesús Suárez, a citizen with sensory functional diversity (he is blind) whom Lamas met through Xente de Barrio and whom he He spoke of Fegerec. “They do a great job. They direct patients who have very rare diseases and do not know where to go, they tell them where the best specialists and treatments are, "explains the promoter of Coge aire.

Precisely, one of the purposes of the person in charge of the initiative is to publicize the associations and the important work they carry out on a daily basis. "For example, I thought that the Economic Kitchen only provided food but when you go there you realize that they help people a lot to get out of very precarious situations because they help with bureaucracy, to pay for medications or rent...", indicates Lamas.

“They do an incredible job that is worth learning about and supporting”, encourages the creator of Coge aire regarding the associations with which she collaborates. Lamas highlights the important work of this type of entity and explains that her initiative developed naturally, without planning, although the possibility of creating a non-profit association is now on the table.

The agency La Naval also collaborates selflessly with the project and is responsible for the logo, "very healthy lungs that simulate air, breath", as well as communication. People interested in making their contribution can do so through the project website by purchasing a t-shirt (19 euros) or both (30 euros with the promotion). A solidarity gesture to help and give air to the associations that, like the toilets, take care of us so much.
